Assessing Charge Back Risk

In early 2001 Mac Authorize was discontinued. This was the only known credit card processing software compatible with the Macintosh operating system, and for many users 2001 marked the end of processing credit cards using a Mac.

However, even though Mac Authorize is no longer manufactured or supported, there are still a few ways you can process credit cards with your Mac.

One of the easiest solutions is to have a "virtual terminal." This terminal will function just as if you had credit card software installed on the hard drive of your computer, but since it is web-based you don't need Mac-compatible software. All you have to do is enter your user name and password to log into your virtual terminal.

You can process all sales and refunds with a virtual terminal. It may even let you charge a group of credit cards at once, if you upload them on an Excel spreadsheet. You can also create, save, and view reports online.

If something should happen to your computer, you don't have to worry about losing data or compromising credit card numbers, because your virtual terminal doesn't store this information in your computer.

If you're a Mac user and you need to process transactions on your computer, Ensight Merchant Services recommends Authorize.net. The small license fee is much cheaper than software, and the monthly fee you'll pay for your virtual terminal is negligible for most businesses that accept credit cards.

If you choose not to use a virtual terminal to process transactions, you also have the option of using a standard credit card terminal. In this case, you'll need to manually key in credit card numbers in order to process a transaction.
