Do I need a separate phone line to operate my credit card terminal?
No. You’ll be able to connect your terminal through your existing phone line, using the dual phone jacks that come with all terminals.

When the terminal/software dials out for approval, am I charged any long distance or communication fees?
No. All communication passes through a toll-free line, so you will never be charged any communication fees.

What is the discount rate?
On each transaction, your credit card processor keeps a small percentage, known as the “discount rate.” These fees are largely influenced by the percentage that Master Card and Visa charge.

What are “card present” or “swiped” transactions?
When the credit card is physically present at the point of sale, this is known as a “Card present” or “swiped” transaction. These transactions carry a lower likelihood of fraud, because they typically take place in a retail setting where the customer is present with the credit card in hand. Due to the lower risk, these types of transactions qualify for a lower discount rate, or “swiped rate”.

What are “card not present” or “keyed’ transactions?
When the card is not physically present at the point of sale, this is known as a “Card not present” or “keyed” transaction. These types of transactions typically take place over the Internet, phone, or through the mail. There is a higher chance of fraud in these transactions, so the discount rate, or “keyed rate”, is slightly higher.

Why are there different rates for different accounts?
The amount of risk involved in the transaction typically determines the rates. For example, when the customer is present and the card is swiped in a face-to-face transaction, the risk of fraud is considerably lower, and therefore the rates are lower. In internet transactions and transactions where orders are taken by phone or mail, the buyer and the card aren’t physically. Therefore these transactions are considered higher risk, and a slightly higher discount rate is charged.

What type of equipment do I need if I own a retail business?
If most of your transactions will be “swiped” with the card present at the point of sale, as in a retail business, then we suggest purchasing a credit card terminal with an internal printer. While the printer isn’t strictly necessary, we recommend it so that you can keep a copy of each receipt for your records.

The price difference between a stand-alone terminal and one with an internal printer is marginal. It is more costly to buy a stand-alone terminal with a separate printer.

You can also use PC processing software, such as PC Charge, to process “swiped” transactions in a retail environment. See our full list of credit card terminals and equipment, and Internet and PC Payment software.

Can I use my PC (personal computer) as my credit card terminal for “swiped” transactions in my retail business?
Yes. With software such as PC Charge Express or PC Charge Pro, you can accept “swiped” and “card present” transactions in your retail store, although you’ll need a magnetic card reader. This is slightly more expensive, but is still a viable option.

What type of software will I need if own an Internet business?
You need a payment gateway to process your transactions in order to accept credit cards over the Internet. This gateway acts as an online credit card machine.

Authorize.Net has the most cost effective and user friendly software. They can also handle a business of any size, which is why we recommend Authorize.Net as your payment gateway.

With Authorize.Net, what is the difference between the Authorize.Net WebLink and the Authorize.Net Virtual Terminal?
Authorize.Net is a payment gateway. This means it allows you to accept credit cards over the internet, acting as an online credit card machine.

There are two ways you can use Authorize.Net: You can integrate Authorize.Net WebLink into a website, creating a page where customers can automatically pay for their products by filling out their own credit card information. For a manual credit card entry program, use Authorize.Net Virtual Terminal, which does not need to be integrated into a website. With Authorize.Net Virtual Terminal, you manually enter the customers’ credit card information, and then process it over the Internet. Mail/Phone Order businesses, home-based businesses, and online businesses that don’t need website integration may prefer to use the Virtual Terminal application.

With Authorize.Net, can multiple users sign in under the same password?
Yes. An unrestricted number of users can log into one account. This makes Authorize.Net an ideal option for many businesses, especially those with a large sales force.

By supporting an unlimited number of transactions, Authorize.Net will grow with your business or almost any business model.

Can I use my merchant account on multiple websites?
Yes, you have unlimited use. You can place as many order buttons as you like on any number of domains or websites. There is no limit.

What type of equipment or software should I use for a Mail Order/Phone order merchant account?
You can choose to use a credit card terminal with your mail/phone order merchant account, or you can work with Internet payment processing software such as Authorize.Net.

Call us and we’ll assist you in customizing a solution that’s right for your business type.
What type of equipment or software should I use for a Wireless merchant account?

With a wireless merchant account you can work with your laptop, Internet payment processing software such as Authorize.Net, or you can use a wireless credit card terminal. We suggest a wireless credit card terminal if you’re going to be accepting face to face transactions. This will qualify you for the lower “swiped” discount rate.
